We lost a great decorator this week
« on: December 15, 2010, 02:32:43 AM »
I posted this to Lone Star Holidays members yesterday, but after thinking about it I thought it was worthwhile to post it here as well, since many of us have "known" each other for some time.  I didn't see a category on HU that this fits into so if it needs to be relocated Greg, please do so.

I am very saddened to have to report that one of our own Lone Star Holidays family members passed away yesterday morning. Chuck ?Super Chuck? Schmid had a long and brave battle with cancer and he never gave up. Chuck was a decorator that could hold his own as one half of the ?Dearing Dazzle? team and he loved the Christmas holidays and everything that went with it. I know for a fact that ?Master Elf? Clyde couldn?t have done it without ?Super Chuck?! We all had the opportunity to see ?Super Chuck? in action this year as both Chuck and Clyde were featured on ?Invasion of the Christmas Lights 2?. You could see how proud he was in the display and how much fun he was having.

Chuck was a very strong and proud father as well, and enjoyed his time with his children and wife. The boys can be seen helping their dad set up the display this year (on the Invasion special) and you can see the love that they all had for one another as they worked on their shared holiday display.

Over the past week, as the situation became more and more serious, Clyde and I had discussed a fitting way to honor Chuck?s memory and I mentioned that a few years back I had lost a family member before the holidays. I did a ?black out? for that person that year and would turn off the display for an hour 1 night a week. Clyde said ?an hour to have your lights off will just pi$$ off Chuck!! Maybe 5 minutes with a prayer just to show respect. Chuck would want to see the lights! I guarantee!? Because of this we?d like to ask that, if you are so inclined, we can turn our displays off on Wednesday at 8pm for 5 minutes. Use that time to pray, or think of a moment you may have had with Chuck, or just to reflect on how lucky we are to still be here with our own families. I know I?m going to hug my girls a little tighter during that time.

This is difficult news, especially in light of what should be a joyous season. On Sunday I was whining on LSH about there being no traffic at my display and now I feel pretty badly because that was such a trivial thing to be upset about. For me, and maybe for you, this sad time helps put things in perspective in regards to what the holiday time is really all about: friends, family, and the gift of time we still have with those people.

We?re sad right now, but let?s try to keep the ?Merry? in ?Merry Christmas?. Chuck would have liked that.

Aww....that's so sad.
This is the worst time of year to lose a family member. He will be missed.

Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks Jen and Steve.

To Steve's point- this wasn't just an LSH thing, it was someone who decorated for a long time on a large scale, and that is something we all share.  Chuck was also having his "15 minutes" from the Invasion of the Christmas Lights 2 show this year, so more people knew he was.  Regardless of which decorating forum we all hang our "online" hat at, it was something I wanted to share with my friends and fellow decorators at the forums I go to.

Thanks again guys.

Ryan, I didn't mean that LSH would be the only place that he was missed.  I just figured that was where those who knew him best hung out, and they'd appreciate knowing Chuck was in the thoughts of all decorators.

I totally know what you meant Steve.  I was also pointing out how, because our decorating community is relatively small (like Cheers- everybody knows your name!), I wanted to share it with those places that I frequent.  While HU is new, there's a lot of folks here that I've come to know over the years (yourself included) that, for reasons we don't have to get into, wouldn't see the posting on PC or LSH.

Ryan: Sad news to hear for sure.... My thoughts are with his family.  His was one of the displays I did actually catch on Invasion 2 a few days back.  Was hoping they re-run it so I can see the rest.  Now it will be different to see with him gone....

Very sad to hear.  I've recorded the Invasion of the Lights 2, but haven't watched it yet.  I'll be thinking of his family as I watch this and continue thru the season.

Such sad news at any time of year, but it just seems so much worse at Christmas time. I'm so sorry. I never knew Chuck but had seen his display via pictures. I watched Invasion of the Christmas Lights and at least now I can put a face to the name.

Ryan, my display will be off for that 10 minutes at 8:00 in honor of his memory. I just now changed the show editor..

I know I'm chiming in a little late, just found this thread, but I saw Invasion the other night and when the segment with him and Clyde came on, I thought it was great that two next door neighbors shared a display. I was more drawn to Chuck as he was the one doing the more "classic" display. Unfortunately I don't have a display this year, but I'll think about him, and his family, Wednesday night.
I ain't judgin', I'm just sayin...
